About this Performance
Elim Chan, who “conveyed a sense of wonder” (Los Angeles Times), in her last appearance at the Bowl, leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic on a fantastical journey, anchored by Stravinsky’s magical Firebird Suite. Based on a Russian folktale about a handsome prince and beautiful princess who are rescued by the mysterious Firebird, Stravinsky’s suite soars, culminating in glorious triumph.
James Ehnes, a violinist of “velvety sound and sensitivity” (The New York Times) returns to the Bowl for the first time since 2019 with Tchaikovsky’s lyrical but formidable concerto, initially thought unplayable due to its technically demanding solo part.
The second half of the program begins with Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from his 1945 opera Peter Grimes. In a masterly stroke, Britten captures the changing conditions across the British coastline, as well as emotional turmoil of the opera’s characters through these four exquisite miniatures.
This performance is generously supported in part by the Kohl Virtuoso Violin Fund.
Concert Update: As the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela is unable to perform at the Hollywood Bowl on this date, the previously announced program has changed.
